History
Traditional Usage
At present there is no evidence of indigenous use of this plant. This may be because the tree is so rare in the wild and the local population of indigenous peoples were forced to move away after European settlement of the area. The large scale clearing of forest very early on for sugar cane and cattle grazing could also have contributed to loss of information on it’s traditional uses.
However it is reasonable to assume the leaves were rubbed on the skin for a perfume effect.
Early European Usage
There is no record of Lemon Berry® oil being produced and sold previously.
Present Day History /Story
Lemon Berry® oil is a new Australian oil pioneered by Essentially Australia, grown and distilled at our Byron hinterland plantation.
In 2015, while looking for rare, native Rose plants, I found an exceptionally fruity, fresh, sweet smooth berry like scented Lemon Tea Tree (Leptospermum petersonii).
I took a sample back to my team and they loved it.
So in late 2015, we started propagating from the the plant. We successfully planted the tree out into our Byron hinterland plantation in December 2016.
In 2022, we conducted a trial distillation which was a success, so in April 2023 we conducted our first commercial distillation.
Lemon Berry® is grown and sold exclusively by Essentially Australia.
