Extraction and Farming Method

Australian Blue Cypress essential oil is extracted via steam distillation of the stem and branches. Australian Blue Cypress is grown in plantations around Darwin. These plantations were actually planted by the Northern Territory government for timber production in the 1960’s. After Cyclone Tracy in 1974, timber (and hence the plantations) were deemed unsuitable for cyclone proof construction. As a result the blue cypress plantations were left idle and written off, until the ‘discovery’ of its unique essential oil in 1995. Today the plantations are managed sustainably based on a 30 year rotation. The trees are harvested and then steam distilled for around 48 hours. The harvesting of quite big trees requires heavy machinery and a long distillation process, both of which add significantly to the cost of the oil.

History – Australian Blue Cypress

Traditional Usage

The Tiwi people of Melville and Bathurst Island have traditionally used Australian Blue Cypress for probably thousands of years. They crushed the plant material and used it as both a hygienic wash and to keep away the little pests of dusk and dawn. Plant pieces were also placed on hot stones or ashes the vapours inhaled.

Early European Usage

The tree is reasonably plentiful in the wild and was used quite extensively for house construction in Darwin, as the timber is quite termite resistant. The first timber milling occurred around 1876. It was used to build  the ‘Administrative Building’ (the main government building of the day) in Darwin. The resin from the Australian Blue Cypress was called Australian Sandarac resin and was used medicinally for coating ‘gastro-resistant’ capsules, so the capsules did not dissolve in the stomach.

Present Day Usage

Australian Blue Cypress essential oil is being rediscovered by the aromatherapy community and others seeking natural products. Blue Cypress essential oil is used for meditation and relaxation, however it appears to have excellent medicinal potential too. Australian Blue Cypress essential oil is used as a base or fixative for perfumery. The fragrant wood has recently seen small volumes of timber exported to China for fragrant furniture making.
