The Australian Rosewood essential oil is one Australia’s newest essential oil distilled by Essentially Australia at our farm site in the Byron Bay hinterland. The aroma of Australian Rosewood is a calming, inspiring, earthy, woody scent reminiscent of the rainforest with subtle hints of sweet and floral notes. It is an essential oil from a very rare Australian plant, which we also now grow at our plantation site.
Australian Rosewood essential oil calms, gently inspires and energises for creative activities such as yoga, writing, song writing and painting.
Use as an alternative to traditional Rosewood or Rose essential oil or absolute.
Botanical name: Dysoxylum fraserianum.

Natural Occurrence in Australia
The tree is quite rare, being found in rainforest in New South Wales and Queensland. Australian Rosewood grows to a height of 55 metres and can have a diameter of 3.5 metres in the wild where there is high and regular rainfall, preferring fertile and reasonably moist soils, it tends to grow on its own or in small communities of other Rosewood trees.
Characteristics of Australian Rosewood Essential Oil
Australian Rosewood essential oil has a clear sky blue colour and a thick, honey like consistency. Its aroma can be described as having subtle rosy with earthy, woody, sweet and floral notes. There is a distinctive fresh and inspiring rainforest element in the aroma of Australian Rosewood essential oil.
Extraction and growing Method
Australian Rosewood was grown from seedlings from rare local Australian Rosewood plants. The oil is extracted via steam distillation of the leaves and green branchlets. Australian Rosewood is grown in plantations in the Byron Bay hinterland. Plantation trees are planted in rows, hand harvested and are then steam distilled immediately to maintain quality Australian Rosewood essential oil.

Traditional Usage
At present there is no knowledge of indigenous use of this plant, however it would be fair to assume, indigenous ladies would have grabbed pieces of timber from the tree and rubbed shavings on the skin for a lovely perfume effect.
Early European Usage
There is no record of Australian Rosewood essential oil being used by early settlers for essential oil, however the timber of Australian Rosewood was used for fine furniture.

The description on the bottle says it well: “…earthy, woody… with subtle hints of sweet and floral notes”. I can wear this oil neat on my skin without irritation, which is a plus. A lovely oil, and the blue hue was a surprise (even though it is mentioned in the description).

Even judging by its lovely pale blue hue alone, you might guess this oil promotes creative self-expression. For me, however, it feels subtly nurturing and harmonizing above all. It’s as if it opens up your heart and fills it with a serene warmth and sense of acceptance. My first instinct was to blend it with Roman Chamomile, and I find they complement each other beautifully. It’s perfect for those times when I need something gently comforting, but still with a certain inspiring lightness to it. A truly precious combination in a single EO.
