Extraction and Farming Method
Australian Blue Cypress essential oil is extracted via steam distillation of the stem and branches. Australian Blue Cypress is grown in plantations around Darwin. These plantations were actually planted by the Northern Territory government for timber production in the 1960’s. However after 1974’s Cyclone Tracy, wood (and hence the plantations) was deemed not suitable for cyclone proof housing, so the plantations were left idle and written off, until the ‘discovery’ of its unique Australian Blue Cypress essential oil in 1995. The plantations are deemed sustainable based on 30 year rotations. The trees are harvested and are then steam distilled for around 48 hours. The harvesting of quite big trees requires heavy machinery and a long distillation process which both add significantly to the cost of the oil.
History – Australian Blue Cypress
The Tiwi people of Melville and Bathurst Island have traditionally used Australian Blue Cypress for probably thousands of years by crushing plant material for use as a hygeinic wash and it was also used to keep away little pests of dusk and dawn. Plant pieces were also placed on hot stones or ashes to inhale vapours, to take advantage of its properties.
Early European Usage
The tree is reasonably plentiful in the wild and was used quite extensively for house construction in Darwin, as the timber is quite termite resistant, the first timber milling occurred around 1876. This timber was used to build the ‘Administrative Building’ (The main government building of the day) in Darwin The resin of the Australian Blue Cypress was called Australian Sandarac resin and was used for coating ‘gastro-resistant’ capsules, so the capsules did not dissolve in the stomach.
Present Day Usage
Australian Blue Cypress essential oil is being rediscovered by the aromatherapy community and others seeking natural products. Australian Blue Cypress essential oil is used for meditation, relaxation, however it appears to have excellent medicinal potential also. Australian Blue Cypress essential oil is used as a base or fixative for perfumery. The fragrant wood has recently seen small volumes of timber exported to China for fragrant furniture making.
